Batchelder Book Review: A game for swallows: To die, to leave, to return

Part One:

Book Information:

Abirached, Z. (2012). A game for swallows: To die, to leave, to return. NY: Graphic Universe.

Genre: Batchelder award; graphic novel, multicultural/global, translated International autobiography, comic book, young adult.

Grade Level: Grades 6-8, young adult, adult.

I would highly suggest this book for mature readers. The reading level is somewhat complex, and scene changes can be quite confusing. I think it would work for students in grades 6th through 8th.

Part Two:  Response to the book: Predictions, thoughts about craft.

I made an emotional connection to this book. I think hearing the author’s viewpoint from a first person narrative made it more meaningful and true. I couldn’t imagine growing up in a world through war and seeing or hearing that in my daily life. Having to run and hide just to try and feel safe must have been an ongoing stressful experience. I think that I sometimes take a lot of things for granted so these books really help put things in perspective. It was easy to put myself in the shoes of the author and the family and wonder why they just didn’t leave and get away from it all. But there always seems to be something about the place we call home because it is comforting to us. Moving to another country or state would be hard for those who care about their culture. I belive the author really helped capture the setting and emotion throughout the novel. It was a really great cultural experience to read.

Part Three: Critique

This was a great book and truly deserved the Batchelder Award. Coming from the authors first hand experience it makes the situation and experience more real which engages the audience. I felt like some of the scenes were changed often, so it was sometimes hard and complicated to understand. For that reason, I would suggest that this book be read by young adult readers or those in 6th through 8th grade. The images of this book provided a great picture of the setting and amount of detail in the artwork displayed. They may have been simply drawn images, but the amount of detail in them was awesome. The scene changes were easily seen through the use of lines and borders around images. The author clearly depicted the characters voices from the narration by using a black border with white text or white border with black text. The language of the culture was also expressed, along with the art and types of foods eaten. This is a wonderful book to introduce to readers that will engage students with a real life experience from another perspective.

Part Four:  Lesson Plan / Activity (Grade 6)

Using the Common Core State Standards:

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.7 Compare and contrast the experience of reading a story, drama, or poem to listening to or viewing an audio, video, or live version of the text, including contrasting what they “see” and “hear” when reading the text to what they perceive when they listen or watch.

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.2 Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.7 Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.9 Compare and contrast one author’s presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a memoir written by and a biography on the same person)

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Objective:

  • The student will be able to read grade level appropriate text.

  • The student will be able to compare and contrast an audio documentary and a book in ways they are similar and different.

  • The student will be able to explain in a paragraph, ideas about the book and documentary.

  • The student will be able to describe the Israel versus Lebanon cultures using supporting facts from the book and documentary.

Lesson outline:

For my lesson activity, I decide to go with 6th grade because of the complexity level.

  • Students will read the book in groups of 2. Once they have read the book in their groups, they will have a book review discussion in groups of 4 or 5. (This way they can gather feedback/supporting details from other classmates to increase comprehension.)

  • Here is the website for a documentary. It is about an hour long, lots of subtitles (which could be difficult), so you may want to only show some portions of it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-IO__Ni7bA. Granted this is not the only documentary out there, feel free to choose your own that you may come across.

  • Using the documentary and book, A game for swallows: To die, to leave, to return, students will make comparisons and similarities to the stories told in each. What are some of the same things that were discussed, and what were some of the differences that were expressed? They will use supporting facts to from the text and documentary. Students must have a total of 5 similarities and/or differences.

  • After 5 writing a paragraph essay explaining the similarities and differences, write one  paragraph in their journal that explains the importance of obtaining multiple references/reliable sources. Is it better to gain one’s story, or would it be more reliable to obtain many resources?

Discussion questions:

  • Can you remember a time that you were scared or when you didn’t know what the outcome would be?

  • Do you think that we may take things for granted in our daily lives (including receiving an automatic dial tone to call out), or fresh water from our local resources?

  • Would you pack up and move your family out of the country, or would you stay because you were at home and that is what feels safe?

  • What information do you think the author was trying to share?

  • Why is it important to be sympathetic to those in different cultures? How would you feel if you had to move to another country and were different from everyone else around you?

Touchstone Reading Response: Lincoln a photobiography by Russell Freedman

Here is my Response on the book: Lincoln a photobiography by Russell Freedman. Image

Source & Background:

Freedman, R. (1987). Lincoln: a photobiography illustrated with photographs and prints. New York, NY: Clarion Books.

Genre: Informational text. Children’s/Youth Non-fiction, biography with illustrations describing the life of Abraham Lincoln (America’s 16th president).

Suggest grade level would include (yet not be limited to) 3rd grade through middle school. (This would also depend on the readers complexity level.)

Thoughts & Reflections

This was actually a great, informational book that discusses a well known, famous, historical figure. Even though the book was fairly easy to read (for someone my age), it held my interest because the words, sentences and chapters flowed so smoothly. The illustrations of this book helped create a connection to the reader and paint the picture imagined. I can see why this book won a Newbery award in 1988. Even though it may be a little outdated, I would suggest this book or perhaps use it in my own classroom for a lesson. Students can use this book to understand more about the wars during that time, or learn more about slavery and that history. The thing that I really liked about this book was that it captured images and provided portions of Lincoln’s speeches or famous quotes. This would be a great way to have students create a historical timeline of that period or research more about one of America’s presidents. I like how every chapter there is a quote said by Abraham Lincoln. For example, “If my name ever goes into history, it will be for this act.” That could be a clue as to what students are going to be learning about. Why did he say this, and what act is he talking about? The answer, creating and signing his full name on the emancipation pronunciation document because he never signed his full name prior to that. Students could continue learning about how he played a dramatic role in freeing the black slaves.

Critique

This was a great, informational biography to read about Abraham Lincoln. The plot was perfect. It took you to where Abraham Lincoln was born and followed around with him until he later passed in 1865. It was believable and accurately displayed the information. The reader was kept up to date throughout all the locations he traveled. With the details and flow of the writing, it was easy to paint a picture and be present during those years. The setting takes place on the same day Abraham Lincoln was born (February 12, 1809) in Hodgenville, Kentucky. The theme includes American History, The Civil War, Presidency and Historical Figures. This book provides facts about Lincoln’s life struggles and successes. It was a well written biography that captured the success of America’s 16th president. It definitely deserved a Newbery Award, and I believe students would be interested to read it.

Lesson Ideas

Objective:

I like the idea of student’s recreating a story or in person. It helps them understand more of the details they may have not payed particular attention too and it grasps students attention in a different way. I think a good idea would be to have maybe 6th grade students act out a scene or particular theme within the book.

Here is an example of a video students created based on the book. http://youtu.be/1_uKfK_btns. Students could pick a certain portion of the book to create a video that represents their portion of the book. Students can be creative and have fun with it while learning and acting out historical periods and past events. Students in this video portrayed when Lincoln was assassinated, but they could also portray The Battles of Bull Run or The Gettysburg, or even famous speeches spoken by Lincoln.  Teachers can be very creative with this book.

The objective would be similar to something like this: Using the book Lincoln a photobiography by Russell Freedman, the student will be able to describe a specific event within historical time period, or a personal moment of president Lincoln’s that that has helped shape the future of our history in America.

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.2 Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.3 Identify key steps in a text’s description of a process related to history/social studies (e.g., how a bill becomes law, how interest rates are raised or lowered).

Discussion questions could include:

1) What tragic events occurred while president Lincoln was in office?

2) What type of preparation did Lincoln go through to achieve his presidency?

3) How has America’s 16th president been a historical figure to remember and praise. How has this president forever changed the history of America?

Or another activity could be to have students write an essay comparing the differences between the biographies written. This would be a good example to show students in the comparison of authors and factual data. The standard for that would include but not be limited to:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.6.9 Compare and contrast one author’s presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a memoir written by and a biography on the same person).

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.

There are many other standards that could also relevant. There are also other topics that could be discussed from this book. Students could learn more about other subjects including: the personal life of Abe Lincoln, the Gettysburg address, the emancipation proclamation, or Lincoln’s second inaugural address. What is should have said is, here are a million and one ways to use this book! Possibilities are endless!

Wow, I made it!

So, I will try again for the third time to post this blog as I am having technical difficulties with the advanced technology of my old computer. These are some complications we come across when it comes to technology, but for the most part technology is an amazing resource to incorporate to school curricula as it helps to engage students with new interests and critical thinking.Image

I have successful accomplished another semester at La Verne. This semester was really challenging for me not only because of the amount of courses taken and the subjects, but because I had to get in to the grove of things since I had to drop my courses last Spring. But, I made it, and I will finally be a senior which is really exciting.

Out of most of the courses I have taken for my degree in Liberal Studies, I think that Computers in Education was probably the most fun and interactive course. It is definitely the most applicable to teaching all subject areas and provides many many different varieties of resources to students. Technology is something that should be integrated to all subjects so that students not only gain computer literacy, but to become increasingly engaged and build new interests. Technology has greatly advanced and it will become an important aspect to teaching our future students.

I wanted to address the learning outcomes for the Computers in Education course I have taken and reflect on my progress towards these goals. Reflection is an effective process for teachers and students and it also helps to improve accuracy, practice and ideas.

1) Analyze, learn & use current technology related to learning and education.

Throughout this course I have reflected on many different uses of technology in education and the importance of technology and it’s resources. I can almost always find reasons to incorporate different types of technology and resources in my classroom. Different software programs, applications and cloudware programs all have various reasons why they should be included into the curriculum for students. I can definitely say that I have came across some really interesting resources thanks to my wonderful classmates. As I have mentioned previously, reflecting on the different resources and techniques technology offers will help me create a successful classroom in the future. I felt pretty literate when it comes to technology and computers prior to this course, but I am leaving with new techniques and resources as well as ideas and perspectives. Thanks to my classmates I have learned of ways to incorporate new cloudware programs like Socrative which instantly provides responses and helps teachers and students interact with technology. I have also learned QR codes, which I had no previous knowledge on and found that it can be an effective tool to use in the classroom. Additionally sites like blackboard and Edmundo help students and teachers connect and collaborate which can strengthen an classroom and it’s environment. I will forever be thankful to my classmates for sharing this information and also their ideas and reasons behind the importance of technology and techniques.

2) Resourcefully, consistently, and actively participate in various individual, small group and large group assignments.

Group projects have always been my favorite. I think because it lightens the intimidation of coming up with ideas on your own. Working with different students helps broaden my ideas and perspective which will help strengthen myself to become a successful teacher. While working in groups is important, it is also important to individually work and aspire your own ideas and reflections that highlight my own strengths. I think that the amount of individual projects and group projects in this course was a perfect fit.

3) Practice thoughtful, cognitive reflection about the application and impact of technology in education and culture using a course blog, course textbook topics and project development.

I must admit, I really dislike writing. I have been told that it happens to be a strength of mine, but I have to be in the mood to write a good paper. But as we (as future educators) may know that writing is an important process that takes practice and reflection is equally important for self improvement. I think having students blog online and receiving peer feedback is a great idea. It can highlight students personality and help them receive constructive feedback that will help them additionally improve. Additionally, blogging about the topic of technology, the improvements of technology and the importance of technology gave me a better understanding of where education is headed. It has helped me realize that advanced/modern technology will help shift learning perspectives and reach educational goals. I plan on having my students blog with reflections and ideas because it helps them analyze and improve using the writing process.

4) Develop several projects integrating a variety of new technologies. Selectively narrow to the tools you found most valuable to be integrated in the cumulative project based learning activity; a webquest.

As I have mentioned previously, thanks to my wonderful classmates, I have came across a few new software/cloudware programs that will become useful in my teaching career. There have been several projects we have created in this course and all of which are useful. I plan on using screencast to create videos to help my students with either instructional feedback, constructive feedback, or just to refresh and recap on the information learned. Toondoo.com is one of the best websites I have used throughout this course. Why? Because it creates great visuals for students that holds their interest. Not only can I relay a message with images, but I can create books of knowledge for students that they will enjoy reading/seeing. Socrative is also another amazing website that provides instant interactive feedback to teachers and students. Thanks to this course and my wonderful classmates, I have been introduced to many new different types of technology that will provide students with a new outlook to learning. Although I have previously created a website in other classes, I have learned new techniques and improved in my abilities to formulate a successful one. Having this knowledge and being able to create a webquest (online with it’s own site) is extremely rewarding.

5) Research, design, construct, and demonstrate a personally and professionally meaningful educational webquest.

Although this project is still in the works, I am sort of glad I was required to create a big project like this. It will never be fully completed, as I will consistently make changes to provide a successful project. It is an accomplishing feeling to know that you can create a project that is technology interactive and helps students think critically about what they can do to improve the world they live in. I think having a project like this will help students develop new interests and will also promote new talents/strengths. I can’t wait to see my future students participate in this project one day. I hope that it will aspire students to build new interests and become more involved with the world they live in.

With all the projects and assignments required for this course, I am actually thankful they were required. It was all in hopes to create successful future teachers and to improve education for our future students. I can’t wait to test my ideas and creations in the classroom.

Wow, that was a lot! But, I have finally made it through another semester!

The World in Their Hands

I was having technical difficulties with this image so I couldn’t capture the whole cartoon.  But I wanted it to show the idea of technology resources in educational settings. Thinking about the past and the resources that were available to teaching (books & books & more books), our resource is now technology. toondooWhen I think of resources now, I think of technology, because of the amount of resources it can lead us to. Having the use of technology in the classroom brings many opportunities for students. I think teachers have done a great job thus far in using the resources available. As we may know, not every school is equipped with technological resources because of the expense. But, teachers have still found a way to make these resources available to students so that they can integrate technology in the classroom. If every student had access to some type of technology and more resources were available to each student, the opportunity for more hands on learning and experience will greatly increase. Teachers can structurally plan lessons that focus on the use of technology and not worry about the limitations students have outside the school environment. Teachers wouldn’t have to worry about students having internet access, or personal computers at home, they could implement these lessons IN the classroom. This helps assure teachers that every student is receiving equal opportunities. Of course, I love the idea of every student being able to access resources in school, as it provides more hands on learning approaches and makes learning fun.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case and teachers still have limits when creating lesson plans that include the use of technology because of the restrictions students may have. But there are ways to work around that. Even just having access in the classroom (with only one resource) is enough to get started. Lets face it, the students are no longer interested in the endless amounts of books they have to read and carry home everyday. They are interested in discovering the world for themselves. The teacher no longer has to teach from the books, instead they can guide the classroom to make their own discoveries.

Additionally, I would like to add that I have now created my own vast amount of resources that I can use in my future teaching career. Being able to create a website and include all of my materials, thoughts and ideas will benefit me when I do become a teacher. It is a way to share ideas and implement new ideas.  One of the most important things about being a teacher now consists of being resourceful. Creating a website will also be beneficial for organizational purposes and for my students. I am always gaining ideas from others, so I am happy to share my ideas as well.

This is the link to my website https://sites.google.com/a/laverne.edu/portfolio-janicecarmell/home if you care to look around. I have worked really hard and it is such an accomplishment to create my own resource and go to opportunities.

Crystal Ball – Comic Strip Creators

Finding educational technology tools to integrate into the classroom is so much fun. I came across so many neat ideas that I wanted to learn more about. It just goes to show that the possibilities of integrating technology are endless. The amount of technology we have available to us at such a minimal costs (if not free), really can add a lot of character to learning and persevere student progress. Technology helps to create an engaging and interesting hands on experience for students to interact with the real world. Which brings me to the reason I choose www.toondoo.comImage

The tool I choose to learn more about and help explain to others was a comic strip creator. It was created by a company called Jambav who is dedicated to formatting educational software and games for students. Check out there website, they always have different features. (http://www.jambav.com) That is actually how they introduced ToonDoo, by featuring for the month. This was probably about 10 years back, but it became larger than anticipated so they created a whole website, all for free! For this month, October, they have a vocabulary interacting game for all ages. Jambav is supported by a United States company called Zoho Corporation (http://www.zohocorp.com) who also formats many different types of professional software (even some similar to Google). I choose this site because of all they have done so far for students. They seem like a really great company designed to provide students with alternative learning benefits.

I had a lot of fun playing around on ToonDoo. It had so many options and tools available, I could really spend hours just messing around. What I enjoyed the most about it, is that it allows you to become creative artistically through a different perspective. And especially because I am horrible at free drawing, it was a perfect fit. I felt like I could create a cute little comic and not have to worry about drawing anything. Toondoo seemed a little more appropriate for younger students because of the types of characters and features available. It was user friendly and simple, yet had so many features. I loved the fact that you could create full comic books. There are so many options to integrate this tool into the classroom. Creating book reports, or illustrating science processes. It can be used to help explain history and scenes, while allowing for natural artistic abilities and creative thinking. So..SO many options!

I am not sure if teachers in the future will use this type of site. Personally, I can see it being used in the classroom years from now. Not only are students engaging with technology, but they are being creative in their own way showing off their talents. I think that if there was assurance about having that internet access at home or in the school setting along with having personal or laptop computers or ipads, students could engage with these types of sites more often. This particular site is roughly at least 10 years old and you still see it being used by so many, and internationally. I think it is a great way to interact with other cultures, because you can also view their abilities and personalities. I find this type of tool will be extremely beneficial in the future. Maybe it is not a tool that can be used everyday, but it is great for different types of projects. Once technology is integrated more often, I can definitely see this type of tool being used. The only pitfall I would say is parents and teachers having to monitor students accounts. Even though the site is safe, they still have to have an email account to sign up. Jambav has a version that is strictly dedicated for educational institutions, which is awesome, except it is of course not free. If the fee was fairly low, I can see it being of value to pay for the limited edition for easier monitoring access. But other than that, it is a great site, free resources, and has much educational value! Check it out!

Cloudware can be amazing tool!

Sites like Google and YouTube are so commonly used. They are amazing resources that can keep you connected to the outside world. I personally use Google all the time. Google has so many applications and programs that can be used for professional or personal use. Many students are already using some of these cloudware programs which can make instruction in the classroom a little easier. Sites like screencast and snag it can also be extremely beneficial in the classroom. Teachers can now create their own videos or engage the whole classroom with creating videos to help motivate during instruction. Using these tools also helps all students become familiar with the cloudware programs that they may use outside the classroom setting.

For our assignment we had to use many of these programs to re-create a fairy tale story.

Here is our version of Jack and the Beanstalk:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsWmzQ5rSPXmyyAnyOSTd_5CyaVjwvMf2

It was really fun. I decided to take all my own pictures because I didn’t want to hassle with citing my images. I found this a little easier, and I also thought it made it more interesting. I was able to make relations using images of objects in the “outside” world.  I think that also helps students make connections, and it was cute to see that the images were not always the same throughout the story.

I can definitely see myself using many of these programs, especially when I become a teacher. I believe that bringing in a variety of resources for students can help them not only become familiar with these programs, but it also helps to keep them interested to learn. Besides the obvious fact that they are creative and helpful tools, most of them are also free which makes it all the better!

Creating Instructional Videos

Creating a video can be a lot of work. Especially for those who are uncomfortable with speaking. It took me at least 10 tries until I finally decided I was just going to accept the result. I get stumped or feel pressured at times so I add in words (like, um) when they aren’t necessary.  But of course, the end result was worth it. It was intriguing that I could create a video explaining something that I am showing you on my screen. Instead of having to relay the text or words to a person, you can use a visual with words, expression, details and easy navigation that allows the other person to understand and see what is being explained. If you are unable to promote one on one instruction, this is definitely a handy tool to be able to use. I know many of the online courses I have taken thus far, have required me to make videos, so fortunately for me, I was able to navigate this time without having to teach myself.

I have so far used Jing and screen cast. Both of which are great free resources. I recommend Jing because it allows you to save all the videos you have created and it just seems easier to navigate through for me. Maybe that is because I am familiar with it.  YouTube is great for many purposes, including to store your own videos you have created.

So the website I choose was http://www.wufoo.com/. I liked this website because it allows you to create different types of forms. I think it can become useful not only for business purposes, but for educational purposes as well (online quizzes/recaps). For instance, you can create multiple choice and other types of quizzes for students. You can also have students reply with text or in written paragraph forms. English teachers could use this site to create webs or help students write and organize essays. You can also create web forms/websites and have students navigate their way through online homework assignments. There are also ways to create interactive graphs.

Here is the website video from YouTube:

Once I had the website I was going to use and the reasons to use it, I started recording my navigation and explanations. This was the portion I disliked. I can’t stand to hear myself talk, so I am constantly re-recording hoping for a better alternative. Unfortunately, I had to make way with what I recorded or I would be going at it all day. The important thing to remember when making a video is just try and relax and be normal. Speak as if you were explaining something to your grandmother. I say my grandmother because I am completely comfortable talking to her. Also, remember that mistakes are going to happen, that is also included in normalcy. Do not delete or start over again, just because you took two breaths, or you said “um” like I did every 30 seconds. If you get stuck on re-recording till perfection, take a break. It becomes un-natural and awkward and sometimes you just need a break. Also, I would recommend to record in different sections/number breaks. By that I mean, depending on the length of your video, you may want to save it in portions so you do not have to go back and record the whole thing over again.  My video was less than 4:00 minutes, but if you were recording a 15 minute lesson instruction, you should make sure you can save and continue recording from different points.

I also made a quick recap quiz to help you remember the valuable resources for this site.

Please take the time to recap of why I believe this website could be a great technological resource to use in the classroom.

Shift Happens

To me, there are numerous reasons to become a teacher. Having the ability to reach and help guide each child towards a positive future is probably my biggest. This video is completely relevant to the future of our economy. As I have mentioned previously in another of my blogs, teachers have first hand (besides parents, and we can’t be a parent to every child) at guiding students to a successful path. I truly value education and believe it is important, especially starting with the young. I have always said, it really doesn’t matter to me what grade level I teach (K-6) because just having the opportunity to be a part of every child is rewarding enough. Of course, the grade level definitely determines the behavior and complexity level, but that is beside the point. I think the idea is in order to become a successful teacher, they must be looking towards the future, not only of our children, but our economy. Our economy is constantly changing and we are preparing our children for things that don’t currently exist. (So they are able to create new inventions or become talented on a whole other level. Becoming a teacher, for me is to help not only my own child, but being that extra/external guidance (beyond the parent level) in assisting children towards a positive, greener, innovated future and for their lives. I believe any great teacher will be adaptable, creative, knowledgeable, fun, and interactive with the community. They would also understand the importance for guiding our children towards an unknown future. Preparing them for what is to come, or rather, what it is they make of it.

As a future teacher, I find it really frustrating the amount of value we have towards education in America. I think that Americans sometimes take advantage of free education so a lot of children or even un-supportive parents take advantage of it. Then we have third world countries that so thirsty for the knowledge and truly have interest, yet they lack resources to build up their economy. I believe that Americans tend to value business or money, or even materialistic items. My step mother just visited Norway a few months back. She mentioned that they provide a completely free education to international students. If Americans are no longer looking for factory workers, we need to support our children to “think outside the box.” Shift our way of thinking and promoting education. I am not able to change the future, although I would love to, but I am able to change my own way of thinking and possibly touch the lives of children. I can guarantee that it would make me just as proud as their mother. And if it is not enough to inspire a student, than wait till a student inspires YOU!

inspire

I think students also have something to teach us.
